September is…

For many of us, September is like an old friend who always delivers– there are rarely surprises, frequently smiles and always something new to experience. September is greeted with wide open arms, exhausted by cramming that last ray of golden sunshine into our day.  We look forward to reaching for our cardigan’s and putting our feet up while we reflect on the summer that has just ended, and the autumn calendar that is no doubt filling up with no signs of slowing down.

Celebrate National Sewing month.  My grandmother was a frequent seamstress, she loved altering her rack bought clothes and making them her own (I adore that about her), her enthusiasm inspires me, and I longing look at my sewing machine aching for a chance to stretch my creative muscle.  Join me as I dust off my sewing machine and create something beautiful.

Get ready for Octoberfest.  I am not a beer drinker (but that did not really surprise you did it?), and my husband loves the stuff.  This September I am learning to enjoy beer and hosting a beer tasting party to celebrate Octoberfest at the end of September.  Pull up a chart, buy a few bottles and enjoy the company of your friends over a tall glass of beer.

Participate in Better Breakfast Month by serving up morning delights all September long.   Set your alarm a half hour earlier, get your skillet out and turn breakfast into a family affair…the giggles and memories shared around a morning kitchen table are the ones you will hold dear for years to come.  Tune into the Morning Blend and Arizona Midday this month and watch me add a modern twist to some of your traditional favourites.

Rediscover Fennel. The only time Fennel has ever graced my table was while weaning our children, and once when I was brave enough to roast it along side our Sunday chicken.  Admittedly, the children loved it, and it always disappeared at Sunday lunch, so why it vanished from the menu is anyone’s guess.  If you know little of Fennel, what you should know is that in taste, it resembles dill, and  is related to celery…but most importantly it is the perfect ingredient for early Autumn soups like Minestrone.  Other great Fresh Seasonal Produce include Cabbage, Corn, Eggplant, Persimmons, Apples, Grapes, Pears, Peanuts, Sweet Potatoes, figs and melons.  They will start lining the green grocery aisle this month giving your meals a new twist and a much needed change from your usual summer menu.

Take advantage of the last of the summer herb crops by taking cuttings of rosemary, lavender, bay and hyssop, and bundle them in your freezer or drying rack to use all autumn long.

Take delight in the first of the fall flowers, blooms like Chrysanthemum, Cosmos, Delphinium and Gerbera Daisy will start to make an appearance at your local floral shop this September and will go a long way to transitioning your home into fall.

Join me at Brimfield September 7 & 8th.  I will be searching for antiques, meeting new friends and enjoying the delights of the Massachusetts countryside.

Have lunch with me at the WifeStyle Conference September 17th.  Discover you inner wifestyle with the help of experts from Better Homes and Gardens, the Cocktail Deeva, Kelley L Moore and several other lifestyle experts ready to inspire your cooking, floral design and entertaining skills just in time for the holidays.
